The New Testament Vindicates the Old Testament
Professing Christians tend to regard law and judgment in the Old Testament as null and void. They say concerning such things “Oh, that was the Old Testament; that is not for Christians.” Yet when it comes to the 23rd Psalm (i.e. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want…) they don’t say “Oh, that was the Old Testament; that’s not for Christians.”
Everything from Genesis to Revelation is Jesus’ Word which testifies of Him. In the Gospel accounts in the New Testament, Jesus directly spoke of God’s most violent acts in the Old Testament as historical events (including the flood in Noah’s time and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah); and He spoke of lessons for us related to these events (see Matthew 24:35-39 and Mark 6:11-12).
The Apostles of Christ regarded the Scriptures, the established Scriptures among the Jews already (what Christians know as the Old Testament) as even more reliable than what they saw and heard with their own eyes and ears. If the already existing Scriptures didn’t corroborate what they saw and heard, they would have distrusted their own eyes and ears nor would they have expected anyone to believe their testimony concerning Jesus. The Apostle Peter’s words in 2 Peter 1:16-21 prove this.
The Apostle Paul even testified concerning the Old Testament Scriptures in 2 Timothy 3:15-17: “And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”
After Jesus’ resurrection He rebuked two of His disciples for not already being utterly certain that He had risen from the dead- since the already existing Scriptures testified of Christ’s sufferings and the glory that should follow afterwards.
We read the following later in the same chapter concerning the risen Jesus’ interaction with His then eleven remaining Apostles.
Luke 24:44-47: “And he said unto them, These are the words which I spoke unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.”
How can anyone say then that God’s morality is different now than it was in Old Testament times? Or think that He has changed and become softer on sin now? Or think that Jesus isn’t the God of the Old Testament? They can’t say such things without being illogical and not heeding the things clearly taught in the New Testament also.
