The Bible Gives a Verdict About Abortion
Exodus 21:22-25: “If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman’s husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life, Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, Burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.”
This is talking about a woman being struck so that she gives birth prematurely. It is obvious that the death or the injury of the developing infant is the issue in the reciprocal punishment prescribed here. The Lord makes it clear here that a fetus is considered an unborn child which is to be treated as a full human being. The one who caused the premature birth could be punished to a lesser degree for simply causing the premature birth. Any harm done to the woman herself is dealt elsewhere with in the Law of Moses.
When Israel was being rebuked for its wickedness in the Old Testament, mass killing of children was one of the major reasons for its guilt.
Jeremiah 2:34-35: “Also in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor innocents: I have not found it by secret search, but upon all these. Yet thou sayest, Because I am innocent, surely his anger shall turn from me. Behold, I will plead with thee, because thou sayest, I have not sinned.”
Ancient Israel as a whole was guilty for allowing this as are modern Israel, America, and all nations whose governments permit abortion. Whether these children were killed after they were born or beforehand doesn’t change anything since God already gave the verdict that unborn children are to be fully regarded as human.
Job chapter 39 even talks about how the ostrich crushes her own eggs with her foot and is hardened against her young, as though they were not hers. She does so “Because God hath deprived her of wisdom, neither hath he imparted to her understanding.” (Job 39:17) Unlike the ostrich, when people act like this it is because of a willfully darkened heart which is defiant against God.
Romans 1:21-22: “Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools…”
The Bible also has a lot to say regarding those who think they can do whatever they want with their bodies.
Psalm 12:3-4: “The Lord shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaketh proud things: Who have said, With our tongue will we prevail; our lips are our own: who is lord over us?”
From 1 Corinthians 6:13: “Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body.”
Since the vast majority of abortions are done on single females who were not forced to do the act which caused them to become pregnant, most abortions could not have been chosen if the one making the choice hadn’t been very unrighteous and irresponsible with their body beforehand. Those who enable and/or justify them also share in their guilt.
