Jezebel’s Gruesome Demise Served her Right (2 Kings 9:30-37)

Jezebel probably thought that she had gotten away with the many treacherous things she did. For many years, it seemed that was the case.  Nevertheless, God remembered and eventually sent a man to anoint Jehu the son of Nimshi as King of Israel; and appointed him to slay Jezebel for her numerous murders and whoredoms.

In 2 Kings 9:30-37 we see Jehu’s confrontation with Jezebel wherein Jezebel met her end.  We are also given a sample there of Jezebel’s manipulation tactics.

2 Kings 9:30: “And when Jehu was come to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it; and she painted her face, and tired her head, and looked out at a window.”

Seduction was Jezebel’s first resort when she saw Jehu was coming for her.  This included using makeup and also involved putting on an elaborate headdress.  It’s reasonable to believe that she had resorted to such means often from her youth- possibly even with King Ahab in persuading him to marry her (he should have never even considered that).  It is a very good thing that Jehu didn’t comply with Jezebel’s seduction.  Yet she has another tactic ready to dissuade him from righteously executing her; and to also make Jehu seem like the bad guy.

2 Kings 9:31: “And as Jehu entered in at the gate, she said, Had Zimri peace, who slew his master?”

You just have to go back a little in the Bible to 1 Kings chapter 16 to read about Zimri.  There were several key differences between ZImri conspiring against the King of Israel in his days and Jehu being sent by God to execute Jezebel.  Yet Jehu does not talk to Jezebel about truth- because  truth is the last thing she cares about.  It’s amazing how many of Jezebel’s disciples know the Bible to some degree and love to twist it to threaten those who righteously stand against them. They disregard the Bible, set aside its counsel, and even openly mock it- yet they’ll use it when they see anything in it which they think they can use to their advantage in their sin.

2 Kings 9:32-33: And he (Jehu) lifted up his face to the window, and said, Who is on my side?  who?  And there looked out to him two or three eunuchs. And he said, Throw her down.  So they threw her down: and some of her blood was sprinkled on the wall, and on the horses: and he trode her under foot.”

All men ought to be eunuchs in the sense of being steadfast to not let sensual desires cloud their judgment nor hinder them from doing what’s right in God’s eyes.

2 Kings 9:34-37: And when he (Jehu) was come in, he did eat and drink, and said, Go, see now this cursed woman, and bury her: for she is a king’s daughter.  And they went to bury her: but they found no more of her than the skull, and the feet, and the palms of her hands.  Wherefore they came again, and told him.  And he said, This is the word of the Lord, which he spoke by his servant Elijah the Tishbite, saying, In the portion of Jezreel shall dogs eat the flesh of Jezebel: And the carcass of Jezebel shall be as dung upon the face of the field in the portion of Jezreel; so that they shall not say, This is Jezebel.”

Take heed and consider how the timeless principles involved here apply today.
