Calvinism - Reformation Theology

95 Points Against Calvinism – Reformation Theology

Martin Luther was right to stand against the Catholic Church.  The 95 theses Luther published stirred up the controversy which eventually led to his ex-communication from the Catholic Church.  These are not why Martin Luther should not be trusted.  The course which Luther took after his ex-communication, along with his retaining of much falsehood from the Catholic Church after his exit from it, is rather why he did not become a reliable teacher who ought to be followed.

The Reformation movement which Luther began became its own form of deception which did not remedy the deception of the Catholic Church.  Along the same lines, the theology known as Calvinism is utterly consistent with the Reformation Theology which Luther was instrumental in forming.  Though not all in the Reformed churches came to be in total agreement on everything, and though there are adherents of Calvinism which reject key aspects of Reformation Theology altogether, it is still fitting to say that attacking Calvinism is attacking Reformed Theology in general due to how closely these are linked together.

Here are 95 points which simultaneously rebuke the errors of Reformed Theology and Calvinism to demonstrate that anything related to either of these is not a restoration of Biblical Christianity but rather a poison offered in Christ’s name which also leads to spiritual death when partaken of.

One) The Calvinistic concept of Total depravity is destroyed by how the Bible teaches repentance unto life; not life unto repentance.  All of Calvinism rests upon the concept of the total depravity of man.

Two) The Rich Young Ruler having great spiritual hunger, and yet lacking one thing which hindered from possessing eternal life, rebukes Calvinistic Total Depravity.

Three) Man is actually depraved and wicked because he does indeed have spiritual capabilities which he does not exercise properly.

Four) It is nonsense to hold someone responsible for their sins if they do not have the ability to repent of their sins.

Five) Calvinistic Total Depravity can’t properly account for how Jesus told a man that he was not far from the kingdom of God.

Six) God only hardens people who have already chosen to hold to sin and resist repentance against much light.

Seven) The very fact that sinners will desperately look for excuses not to repent of their sins, and the fact that they have no good reason to not repent of their sins, makes it obvious that they are responsible to repent of their sins and are capable of doing so.

Eight) God enduring with much long-suffering the vessels of wrath fitted for destruction would be a mockery if these did not ever have a realistic hope of obtaining His mercy.

Nine) Every vessel of mercy was once a vessel of wrath.  There’d be no need for anyone to obtain God’s mercy if they were not under His wrath.

Ten) There is no conflict between God’s sovereignty and man’s responsibility.  Yet Calvinism portrays such a conflict to exist by its twisted definition of God’s sovereignty which falsely claims that man cannot fulfill his responsibilities towards God unless God irresistibly causes him to.

Eleven) Adam and Eve’s actions immediately after they fell prove that they did not lose all spiritual understanding and capability after they died spiritually.

Twelve) One of the biggest lies ever, bolstered by Calvinism/Reformed Theology, is that you must be a real Christian who is spiritually alive if you are struggling with sin or if you feel bad about sinning.

Thirteen) Adam and Eve undoubtedly had zero defects, morally and otherwise, when they were created.  Yet they had the capacity to choose sin over obedience to God even in their pure, unfallen state.  God has made it clear that He demands and expects people to repent and obey Him in their fallen state in order to obtain His grace which is in Jesus Christ.

Fourteen) The Calvinist basically raises his hand to the claim that man can never raise his hand.

Fifteen) Calvinistic Monergism implies it is up to God to cause man to fulfill man’s end of God’s covenant.  This is blasphemous and presumptuous.

Sixteen) According to Calvinism, God fellowships with darkness by giving life to people and dwelling inside them while they are yet unrepentant.

Seventeen) In teaching that spiritual life (or, regeneration) comes before repentance towards God, the Calvinists practically falsely claim that John the Baptist is the after-runner to Christ rather than the forerunner to Christ.

Eighteen) Reformed Theology goes well beyond saying that people are sinners at birth.  It actually teaches that people are confirmed, intensely hardened sinners at birth.

Nineteen) The Calvinists don’t believe that Jesus alone promotes and defends Calvinism- unless perhaps they don’t do either at all themselves.

Twenty) The Calvinist should be honest and admit he works constantly to try to convince himself he is among the elect.  It would be infinitely better for him to repent and obediently work in line with God’s Word.

Twenty-one) According to Calvinistic Total Depravity, it is just as hard for anyone else to enter the kingdom of God as it is for a rich man.  This opposes the teaching of Scripture.

Twenty-two) The Prodigal Son decided to repent and his father got glory without moving his son to repent by irresistible force.

Twenty-three) The Calvinist betrays his own theology when he commends someone, or thinks better of someone, for accepting his points as he contends for Calvinism.

Twenty-four) Even Martin Luther’s favorite Bible verse (Romans 1:17) demonstrates that continual justification before God is conditioned upon continually living by faith.

Twenty-five) The Apostle’s exhortation for the new disciples to continue in the grace of God in Acts 13:43 would be unnecessary and insane if Calvinistic Irresistible Grace and Perseverance of the saints were true.

Twenty-six) The warning of chapter Hebrews 12 shows that a regenerated Christian could fail of the grace of God over something of a similar nature to Esau selling his birthright.

Twenty-seven) The warnings about falling away from Christ in the Apostle’s epistles must be for saints (that is, authentic Christians; not dead people who are labelled as saints)- since saints are those whom the epistles are addressed to.

Twenty-eight) The exhortations to the seven churches of Asia in Revelation chapters 2 and 3 are one blatant constant rebuke towards, and refutation of, imputed righteousness of Christ doctrine.

Twenty-nine) 1 John 2:19 does not say “they were never of us”- though that is what believers in Reformation Theology read into it.

Thirty) 1 Corinthians 8:11 and 2 Peter 2:1 clearly prove that those whom Christ died for can perish.  This also causes all of Calvinism to come crashing down.

Thirty-one) God gets no glory from man if He essentially forces man into submission like Calvinism practically teaches.

Thirty-two) Acts 24:15-16 and 1 Timothy 1:19-20 prove that maintaining a good conscience towards God is necessary to continue in faith and thus continue in His grace.

Thirty-three) 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 shows that the Christian is under probation.

Thirty-four) 1 Timothy 4:16 shows that the Christian’s salvation is not complete yet.

Thirty-five) Matthew 24:9-13 shows how the Christian still has a course to finish which they are not guaranteed to finish without disqualification.  The falling away which these verses describe would be meaningless activity if all of those who turned away were never really on the right track (the narrow way to eternal life in Christ) to begin with.

Thirty-six) 2 Peter 2:18-22 shows that Christians being told that sinning won’t affect their standing in Christ will cause them to return to pursuing sin- which will in turn cause them to fall from grace.

Thirty-seven) One who receives all of Scripture and rightly divides it would stress Ephesians 5:5-6 to the same extent as Ephesians 2:8-9.

Thirty-eight) It makes sense that Satan wants true Christians to think that all who fall away from Christ were never really true believers in Him to begin with.  Calvinism is actually a key tool of the devil to cause the elect to fall away and have their election in Christ reversed.

Thirty-nine) We see in Ezekiel chapters 18 and 33, and countless other times in Scripture, that both the wicked and the righteous are to be warned that committing sin will lead to their damnation.

Forty) To earnestly contend for the faith once delivered to the saints like the Bible commands and be true to Christ we must have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to Calvinism.

Forty-one) Saying “we all have sin in our life” is the language of one who is harboring sin in their life.

Forty-two) Calvinistic Monergism doesn’t hold up in light of the illustrations of Scripture.  If Israel under Joshua had been monergists in trying to conquer Canaan they would have utterly failed and all got killed.  Those who follow Reformation Theology thus become spiritual wrecks.

Forty-three) Calvinists and other unconditional security believers will tell open heathens that the sins they are committing will send them to hell- yet they wouldn’t tell those in their own camp that they’ll go to hell for doing the very same things.  This displays partiality, a double standard, and hypocrisy.

Forty-four) Calvinists typically won’t use words like favoritism and coercion when they talk about God’s drawing and keeping of the allegedly elect.  Yet Calvinism implicitly pins these things on God’s character.

Forty-five) Why do the Calvinists not regard assenting to Calvinism a filthy rag while they call works that are truly good filthy rags?

Forty-six) The Apostles continually taught the opposite of the concept that one’s salvation is not dependent on their performance.

Forty-seven) James 1:27 shows that pure religion and undefiled before God is not the imputed righteousness of Christ.

Forty-eight) The foolish man who built on the sand somehow thought he could mock God by living in disobedience while also having a saving interest in Christ.

Forty-nine) Judges chapter 2 proves that God’s faithfulness to His covenant won’t profit His people if they are unfaithful to Him.

Fifty) Zephaniah 1:4-6 proves that those who are turned from the Lord are damned like those who never sought Him.

Fifty-one) You just have to read the last chapter of the Bible to see that a warning against unconditional eternal security for Christians is virtually the last thing spoken of in the Bible (see Revelation 22:18-19).

Fifty-two) The only ones who can recover from falling are those who consider it inexcusable that they fell.  Those who believe they must sin daily in thought, word, and deed have a mindset which is utterly contrary to this.

Fifty-three) One saying that they must inevitably fall again is a premeditated excuse to sin again.

Fifty-four) 1 Corinthians 10:12-13 demonstrate how we must recognize our capability of falling and also believe that God is able to keep one from falling.

Fifty-five) From the perspective of Calvinism/Reformed Theology, there is no such thing as a 2nd chance or a 3rd chance- since the non-elect never had a real chance at all and the elect have Jesus’ personal righteousness covering their past, present, and future sins already.

Fifty-six) Jesus rebuked many in the seven churches of Asia for many things- yet never for thinking they needed to labor nor for anything related to believing in synergism.  We actually find virtually the opposite.  These chapters also especially prove that Christians are truly on probation.

Fifty-seven) Jesus did not esteem the righteousness of those whom He commended in Revelation chapters 2 and 3 as filthy rags.

Fifty-eight)  Salvation by faith alone= You don’t have to really live like a disciple of Christ.  James recognized that implication and contended against those who promote the concept (such as Luther and the Reformed Theology crowd) as he wrote the epistle of James.

Fifty-nine) Good works, as defined by the Bible, are not a by-product of salvation.  They are rather a necessary expression of a living faith in Christ.

Sixty) Anyone who can’t see how James’ epistle totally aligns with Paul’s epistles shouldn’t be teaching the Bible at all.

Sixty-one) If sinners are totally depraved, no one could end up in a state worse than their first state.  Yet the Bible says this is possible multiple times.

Sixty-two) Believers in Reformed Theology surely must find fault with the Apostle Peter for telling people to save themselves from this untoward generation like he did in Acts 2:40.

Sixty-three) Christ was one hundred percent the healer on earth- though people had to cooperate to be healed.  Reformation Theology implies Jesus tracked people down and irresistibly compelled them to be healed.

Sixty-four) God gets no glory from man if He essentially forces man into submission like Calvinism practically teaches.

Sixty-five)  The very fact that people are saved by their faith in Jesus Christ destroys Calvinism.

Sixty-six) The Calvinists confuse and conflate man responding to God in obedient faith like he ought to with man seeking to exalt himself to Godhood.  By the logic of the Calvinists, the soldier who does his duties and obeys his superiors is seeking to usurp their position and rule the army himself.

Sixty-seven) The Calvinists have chosen to believe that they don’t have freewill to worship and serve God acceptably.  They seek to persuade others to make the same choice.

Sixty-eight) If Calvinists are such wretched sinners as they typically confess themselves to be, then how can they be trusted and why wouldn’t they be using Calvinism as a license to sin?

Sixty-nine) One could not even assent to Calvinistic Monergism without verbs and implications of responsibility being accurate to use in describing that assent.  This makes it evident that the entire concept of monergism is a contradiction and a mockery to common sense.

Seventy) The Calvinist will inevitably do things inconsistent with Calvinism in order to defend it and cause people to embrace Calvinist doctrine.

Seventy-one) Every Calvinist has chosen to be a Calvinist.  Otherwise, a logical Calvinist must confess that one couldn’t become a Calvinist even if they tried.

Seventy-two) If God’s sovereignty means that He appointed everything to happen, then it is God’s sovereignty which causes people to not acknowledge God’s sovereignty.

Seventy-three) Though believers in Reformation Theology think no one can resist the grace of God, it is often easy to frustrate them by resisting Reformation Theology.

Seventy-four) The one who promotes Calvinism implies in everything he says that you have decisions to make about whether you will embrace Calvinistic concepts or not.

Seventy-five) The Calvinists do not seem to fear taking glory from God if anyone should back down from criticizing Calvinism or convert to Calvinism through their efforts.

Seventy-six) Speaking against Calvinism and unconditional security could never do any harm at all if such were actually true.

Seventy-seven) The Calvinists actually do think that they are skilled to understand what God has willed and what God has planned- since they claim to know that the answer to that is everything.

Seventy-eight) All Calvinism is Hyper-Calvinism.  Both “Hyper-Calvinists” and “Regular Calvinists” believe that everything which happens was decreed by God to happen.

Seventy-nine) Jeremiah 19:3-5 is an easy, obvious proof that not everything which happens was decreed by God to happen.  It is evident that God did not decree the murder of children to happen nor any other evil thing.

Eighty) Isaiah 45:7 is a reference to God bringing calamity as a matter of righteous judgment.  It doesn’t teach that God created moral evil.  Read the passage in its context.

Eighty-one) The warning in James 1:13 for the tempted not to say that they are tempted of God is more proof that God being sovereign does not mean that He causes everything that happens to happen.

Eighty-two) Anyone who believes that God actually causes sin to happen is a) Surely going to hell and b) A consistent Calvinist.

Eighty-three) Calvinism essentially teaches that man has no actual responsibility for anything he does.

Eighty-four) The typical Calvinist’s actual definition of a hyper-Calvinist is one who speaks or acts more consistently with Calvinism than they do.

Eighty-five) Jesus’ joy and grief expressed in the Bible expressed at the actions of others would just be hypocritical acting if Calvinism is true.

Eighty-six) Calvinistic predestination is no different than the Pagan concept of fate.

Eighty-seven) Exodus 6:6-8 shows how the Israelites were appointed by God to enter Canaan as they left Egypt- yet almost everybody of that generation who were adults at that time did not make it to God’s predestined goal for them because of their disobedience.

Eighty-eight) Calvinism makes God out to be a liar by handing out invitations to a wedding to many whom He knew had absolutely zero chance of ever actually attending.

Eighty-nine) Romans chapter 9 is actually dealing with why God has cut off the natural Jews who reject Jesus Christ from His covenant promises.  It is essentially a statement that we must come to God on His terms, and not our own or we will be rejected- no exceptions.

Ninety) The Israelites believing that they needed to diligently keep the Passover instructions to be saved by the Passover blood did not oppose salvation by God’s grace through faith.  It rather illustrates real salvation by grace through faith.

Ninety-one) Augustine is evidently the grandfather of Calvinism.  This connects all Calvinists with Roman Catholicism.

Ninety-two) Reformed churches are simply modified Catholic Churches.  Reformed churches have also murdered true Christians and unrighteously killed many others as the Catholic Church has done.

Ninety-three) Anyone who does want the State to take vengeance on others due to their religious beliefs is actually following in the steps of Reformers such as Calvin, Zwingli, and Luther.

Ninety-four) If only Calvinists came to regard John Calvin as Calvin regarded Servetus.  Call a revered Reformed Theology teacher something negative and see if its adherents really think that all men are worthless wretches who have nothing good in them.

Ninety-five) The leaders of the Reformation and the churches it produced did not return to the authority of the Bible as the leaders of the Reformation claimed they were doing.
