Does the Catholic Church Stand Against Israel Like it Ought to?
The Evangelicals who are not rebuking the current unwarranted aggression and murder by Israel and America are shameful. That is especially so of those (such as Pete Hegseth and Franklin Graham) who are openly endorsing it. Though the Pope and certain other Catholic leaders have spoken out against this aggression, there is overall still much which is lacking on the Catholic Church’s part in standing against it.
In a recent statement by the Pope he said “God does not bless any conflict, anyone who is a disciple of Christ, the Prince of Peace, is never on the side of those who once wielded the sword and today drop bombs. Military action will not create space for freedom or times of peace, which comes only from the patient promotion of coexistence and dialogue among peoples.”
This is quite a strange statement coming from the leader of a church which has an extremely extensive history of directly and indirectly waging wars. Now, that church’s leader sounds like a pacifist. Though Israel and the USA’’s current wars are not morally justified, that does not mean all involvement in war is unjustified. The Pope’s statement does not adequately rebuke the actions of the Israeli and American governments. The Pope’s statement is also hypocritical considering his church’s history.
The Catholic Church is by no means principled in standing against the evils of modern Israel. It does not address and stand against these like it ought to. Though the Catholic Church does not recognize modern Israel as a fulfillment of Biblical prophecy, like those who have been duped by the lies of Dispensationalism put forth in the Scofield Reference Bible, it still recognizes modern Israel’s right to exist. That is a big problem. The nation is established on lying, theft, and violent oppression. These things were involved in its founding; and these things have characterized it since.
The evils which Israel has committed since October 7, 2023 are only what it has been doing to one degree or another since it was founded. Pope Pius V’s refusal to support the Zionist cause in 1904 does not mean that the Catholic Church has not been notably complicit with the cause since. It has been.
Has any Pope ever even rebuked the USA for the billions upon billions of dollars it has given to Israel to fund its oppressions and genocide? No.
Has any Pope ever called for Israel to restore the land that was owned by others before 1948? No.
Calling for a two state solution is not a valid action to bring about justice. There would also have to be vast financial compensation paid by the Jews to the Arabs in order for justice to prevail.
Does the Catholic Church refuse to allow support of modern Israel among its members? No.
A recently released Pew Research study (conducted between March 23 and March 29, 2026) found that 35 percent of Catholics in America have a favorable view of Israel. There is no Biblical basis for Zionism, there is no righteous basis for what Israel is doing now, and there is no good reason to justify how Israel was founded. Really understanding and adhering to the Bible is incompatible with even having a favorable view of modern Israel.
Why does the Catholic Church allow Israel support among its membership?
Why does it also allow abortion rights support and LGBTQ support among its membership? The overwhelming majority of Catholics in the United States support those things.
Why does the church even allow supporters of all or any of these things to take communion?
Even when we just look at the ways in which the Bible and the Catholic Church are agreed in defining sin, multitudes who are attached to sin are not stopped from communion in the Catholic Church- in spite of the power which the Pope is said to have.
Some might say at this point “If a church were that strict, it couldn’t be anywhere near the size of the Catholic Church.” Bingo. Strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life (Matthew 7:14). The Bible’s very description of the way to eternal life communicates strictness.
A faithful church will be as strict as the principles of the Bible require. It will not be a massive entity that has often claimed most people born in a nation as its members. It will be separate from the corrupt ways of society rather than accommodating the corruption among the general population. A church which is otherwise could not be a church which Christ recognizes as His.
There is no intention here in discouraging anyone from speaking out concerning what is right in any matter. However, don’t let the Pope speaking against the corrupt US and Israeli governments, in a matter which most people now agree with him on, draw you to make the leap of validating the Catholic Church.Â
